Learning
Talmud Torah
Curriculum.
Your child's curriculum includes the following areas of study: Hebrew
letter recognition (all Mechina, K/1 and 2 classes), Hebrew reading
(Sunday program, 3rd - 7th grade), Hebrew comprehension (Two-Day
program, Alef - Hey classes), Jewish holidays & life cycle,
Torah & Jewish texts, Prayer, Customs, Mitzvot/Jewish Values,
Israel and Holocaust (upper grades).
.
Your interest and participation in your child's program at CHS is
central to his or her experience. We include several family holiday
experiences on our calendar. Watch the mail for information about
other opportunities for you to share in your child's learning.
We welcome questions about Jewish life.
With sufficient parent interest, CHS will arrange adult education
classes or an "Ask the Rabbi" session on aspects of Judaism
and Jewish life as well as Hebrew reading. If you are interested,
speak to your Branch Principal. You may also send your questions
via e-mail to info@jopp.org
During this school year, you will receive
special materials at home which will provide an opportunity to explore
exciting aspects of the Philadelphia Jewish community. Look for
back issues and updates at http://www.jopp.org/connections
.
Beginning with the third grade/Alef class, children need to practice
their Hebrew reading and language skills between class sessions.
Teachers will assign homework on a regular basis to enhance the
classroom learning experience. These assignments may involve parent
participation. Support your child's learning by inquiring about
his or her progress.

Working
Together
Mitzvot Beyn Adam Le'Haveyro
.
Your children have much to learn during this year and
very limited time in which to do it.
- We expect
all students to be in class on time and ready to learn on all
school days.
- We expect
regular attendance. If you know that your child will be absent
on a certain day, please send a note to the teacher prior to that
date. A teacher will contact parents after two consecutive absences.
Learning to show respect for the teacher, as well as toward
other members of the class, is an important part of Jewish education.
We expect each student to be responsible for controlling his or
her behavior. (1) If students are unable to control themselves,
teachers will contact the family. (2) In extreme cases, a student
may be removed from the class.
Please inform us of any special challenges or circumstances
that will enable us to enhance your child's learning.
Your
child will receive Mid-Year and Year-End Progress Reports. The teacher
will contact you should a specific problem arise.
CHS
classes begin on time. It is your responsibility to ensure
that students arrive on time and are in class prepared to learn
when classes begin. Students should be picked up from class at the
conclusion of the session. If you need to pick up your child
early, first go to the office to get a release note from the
Branch Principal. Parents who repeatedly arrive late to
pick up their children may be charged a $25 fee.
Any family needing to withdraw a student should first speak to the
Branch Principal and/or an Administrator. Following that conversation,
families must submit a written letter of withdrawal to the office.
Please do not distribute party invitations
during CHS sessions unless you are inviting the entire class.
Students
may not bring friends to any class sessions. If a friend is interested
in enrolling at CHS, please ask the child's parents to call the
school office to arrange for a visit.

Community
Kehillah
The Board of Directors of Jewish Outreach
Partnership oversees the work of CHS. This Board meets five times
during the year and is made up of concerned volunteers and parents.
If you are interested in becoming involved or attending a meeting,
please contact Rabbi Warmflash at the CHS Office.
In all of our classes, we emphasize tzedakah (charity)
as an important mitzvah (commandment). We encourage students to
contribute money at every session. Students will have an opportunity
to choose charitable organizations or projects to which they will
send the collected funds.
Community Service is central to our curriculum.
In the younger grades, students have opportunities to contribute
food and clothing for the less fortunate or to create an art project
for residents of an old age home or hospital. In the upper grades,
all students go to a community facility to gain hands-on experience
in helping others. We encourage families to join their children
in these experiences.
If you are interested in visiting
your child's class, please call the main office or the Branch Principal
so that we may notify the teacher.
CHS
teachers are available to discuss any concerns parents may have.
To request an appointment, send the teacher a note or leave a message
with the Branch Principal or the main office. You may also contact
many of our teachers via e-mail. Check the faculty
area of our website to see if your child's teacher has an e-mail
account.

Jewish
Ritual
Mitzvot Beyn Adam Le'Makom
All food brought to CHS classes or CHS events must
be kosher. Fruits, vegetables and drinks are acceptable,
but prepared foods must be certified. If you bring food to CHS look
for a "heksher" (a symbol indicating it is kosher); the
most common are either an "O "or a "K." If you
have a question, call the office.
If you
child does not have a Hebrew name, please let us know and we will
assist you in choosing one.
Families wishing to have a Bar/Bat Mitzvah
ceremony for their child are responsible for determining where the
ceremony will take place and who will officiate. Once that decision
has been made, a Bar/Bat Mitzvah Information Form must be
completed and returned to the branch. Tutoring begins one year (two
semesters) prior to the date of the ceremony, providing the form
has been returned and the tutoring fee paid.
Parents must
be actively involved in this process by
- monitoring
the child's daily practice
- staying in
touch with the tutor and
- occasionally
attending a tutoring session.
If a student has not attained a satisfactory
Hebrew reading level, parents will be asked to provide a tutor for
the child to enhance that skill. We strongly recommend that
you pay special attention to this area on each progress report.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah is not the end of the school
year or of your child's Jewish education. We expect students to
complete the entire school year and families will be billed accordingly.
